Grading President Obama’s Health Care Speech
President Obama’s speech on health care seemed pretty powerful to me. But I’m inclined to like the man. So what did a communications expert think of the presentation? Nick Morgan is one of my favorite authorities on speech making, so I was delighted to see his Harvard Business Publishing blog post, Grading Obama’s Healthcare Speech. Morgan delivers a line-by-line autopsy of the speech, which he calls Obama’s “first unambiguously excellent speech since those halcyon days on the stump.” Here are the key ingredients that made the speech work: Acknowledgment that health care is a difficulty and divisive topic, but reminded us that America’s can-do culture has accomplished great things in the past.
