Apple’s Retail Engine Keeps On Rolling

Apple's retail push shows no signs of slowing, and much of its momentum in the coming year will be directed to markets outside its domestic turf. The company plans to open 40 to 50 new retail stores in 2010, said Ron Johnson, its senior vice president of retail, at a recent store opening in New York. More than half of these will be outside the United States; some will be in London, Paris and Shanghai.

PaaS and the Democratization of Innovation

I was re-reading Eric von Hippel's excellent book Democratizing Innovation and found something in it that might help explain the popularity of cloud computing and Platform as a Service. I am on the way to Dreamforce and have little visibility into what Salesforce.com might announce in the next day or two, but no doubt there will be a lot about the cloud, so this might be a good opportunity to make my point.

Down With Opt-Out, Opt-Tricky Software Distribution

Oh, the joy of downloading and installing free software -- only to have a bunch of unwanted, tag-along junkware, or worse, malware, automatically installed on your computer. Why has this unacceptable practice been the norm in the software industry for so many years? The answer to that question is two-fold: money; and lack of a better option.

Holiday and More Airfares Going Up

Surprise! Holiday airfares are going up! OK, so it's not a surprise. And that means that Tom Parsons from Bestfares.com is at it again, pointing out more holiday surcharges placed on airline tickets. Parsons, who's relatively new on the scene with a Web site that supposedly finds the lowest possible airfare, has quite a publicity machine going. Every two weeks or so, Parsons sends out a press release heavily featuring himself that's turned into a story by the Associated Press, Bloomberg and USA Today. (I add myself to those ranks, too.) Not a bad gig for a guy with a Web site. According to the various stories, US Airways is adding a 5 percent surcharge on all flights on or...

Chevron’s Acquisition Strategy: Small Companies Need Not Apply

News that Devon Energy plans to offload its international and offshore assets in the Gulf of Mexico has ignited speculation of when and who will snap them up. Exxon Mobil has been batted about as a possible candidate to buy up Devon's assets. China -- with its growing appetite for energy -- has shown interest in investing Gulf of Mexico assets and may go after some of Devon's assets there. What about Chevron? Pat Yarrington, vice president and chief financial officer of Chevron provided Tuesday some insight into the company's portfolio as well as whether the company is looking for an acquisition target. Yarrington, speaking to investors at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2009 Energy Conference, wouldn't comment on specific M&A targets....

The Debate Between Google and its Opponents: Heart vs. Logic

At San Francisco's Commonwealth Club last night, I met up with some old friends and watched a panel debate "The Future of Books." One late but critical addition to the speakers list was Dan Clancy, who is the chief engineer at Google Books, and the company's pointman on the controversial effort by the search giant to scan millions of out of print books and make them available in digital form in what one of the company's co-founders has called a "Library to Last Forever." Clancy projects a large presence. He is a tall man, with wavy, light-colored hair and bushy eyebrows. He's smart (like everyone at Google), and is an effective spokesman, because he never seems to get defensive under...
