Discovered: Albert Einstein’s Lost Theory of Relativity

Einstein published two theories of relativity: special and general. I can now reveal his third, unpublished theory of relativity: reality relativity. This theory suggests reality is relative to where you stand. Or, to put it more simply, people believe whatever they want to believe. If you want to believe that the world is the centre of the universe, that is fine. And if you are the medieval church, you burn anyone who disagrees. This shows that reality is not only relative, it is defined by power. Reality is what your ruler (boss) tells you it is. This is a principle that has been followed by every dictator through the ages, and by quite a few CEOs today. More recently, we have seen Einstein's...

Google for Apple: Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt

My colleague Michael Hickins yesterday noted some of the peculiarities of a partnership between Google and Verizon beyond my question of whether Verizon will ultimately help move Android into a position competitive with the iPhone. In looking at his analysis, I realized that Apple's reactions of late to Google indicate that the former is scared that its existence is threatened. And it is -- just as thoroughly, if not more so, than that of Microsoft.

Employees are Brushing Up on Career DIY

The traditional career deal has changed: self-management is now key While the signs are that job tenure has remained surprisingly consistent, the traditional promise a career for life may not have survived the recesssion. Even Japan, perhaps the last bastion of the job for life seems to have had to finally admit defeat. Individuals will now be taking more responsibility than ever, for managing their own careers. Firms that understand the importance of career self-management, and work out how they can help employees with this can gain an advantage over their rivals in the job market. Dr Jane Sturges recently led a King's College London workshop on contemporary careers. She examined what employees want from their career and what firms should provide as career...

Elberse on Entertainment Businesses: Opportunities to Make an Impact About

A native of Holland, Anita Elberse is now all about Hollywood.  At the Harvard Business School, she teaches students about strategies in "creative industries" such as entertainment, media and sports.  Part one of our discussion dealt with the unique elements of the business models and strategies in creative industries and part two covered the value of star-power vs. entertainment franchises.  Today: a little about soccer clubs and nightclubs. BNET: Among your subject of research has been one of the most well-known if not the premiere sports brand in the world: Real Madrid.  They've transformed themselves from s star-driven brand to a more team-oriented philosophy and back again.  How do you see this well-known brand evolving? Elberse: They've gone through this...

3 Month’s Notice? You Get Less For Drink Driving

There are a number of things in every workplace that make no earthly sense. It might be a colleague improbably promoted to a position of responsibility despite possessing all the mental prowess and charisma of an abandoned supermarket trolley. Or perhaps it is a system of meritocracy that rewards people by the hours they keep, rather than the work they do. Or perhaps it is a nasty case of false economics, such as downgrading the brand of coffee consumed within the office while the CEO still flies business class. Of course, inequity and nonsense are the values many companies are founded on. But almost nothing is quite so nonsensical as the three-month, or even six-month notice period when an employee...

California’s Hotel Foreclosures Triple

Atlas Hospitality Group, a commercial real estate brokerage in Irvine, Calif. specializing in hotels, reported that in the first nine months of 2009, hotel foreclosures more than tripled from 15 in 2008 to 47. Hotels in default also quadrupled to 259. Most of the troubled hotels were in Southern California, with more than 70 percent of imperiled California hotel loans originating between 2005 and 2007, said Alan Reay, president of Atlas Hospitality. Both Riverside and San Bernardino counties had nine and six foreclosed hotels respectively. However, the entire state has been affected by hotel defaults and foreclosures. One Northern California example is the Fremont Marriott Silicon Valley, whose owners, AEW Fremont LLC, a division of Everest Holdings, defaulted on a $38 million loan last month. The owners took out...

SAP, HP Forging Closer Ties

Struggling enterprise software giant SAP is drawing closer to HP as it attempts to stave off the inevitable decline of its traditional business. The companies are going to announce an extension of their existing partnership in the fast-growing business analytics application space next week during SAP's user conference in Phoenix. Both companies hope that Phoenix is symbolic of a resurgence in their respective fortunes, but where SAP is concerned, that's far from guaranteed. SAP has failed to rise to the challenge set out by former CEO Henning Kagermann in January 2007, showing itself incapable of delivering a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering for small- and medium-sized businesses in a timely manner. Meanwhile, serious-minded rivals like Salesforce.com, Coda, and NetSuite are gaining significant...

Airlines’ Holiday Surcharge Extends to Memorial Day

Previously BNET reported that several airlines, namely Delta, US Airways, American, Northwest, Continental and United, were going to add a $10 surcharge per flight for passengers traveling on the high-demand days of Nov. 29 and Jan.2 and 3. But now, new reports state the holiday fees will also affect more dates in the coming year -- Nov. 30; Dec. 19, 26, and 27; March 14, 20, 21, 28; April 11; and May 28. AirTran Airways has also joined in the charging. As you can see, the surcharge has now extended from Thanksgiving all the way to Memorial Day, so airlines can increase their revenue stream all the way into the second quarter of 2010. Since I was never a big fan of any of...
