Week in Oil & Gas: G20 Axes Subsidies, Obama-Hu Climate Rhetoric, and Chevron Sues

The week ended with a muffled bang as the Group of 20 nations agreed to phase out government subsidies for fossil fuels.  Ending fossil fuel subsidies would have an impact -- positive or negative, depending on whose talking.  But the agreement is viewed largely symbolic since G20 leaders did not set a timeline, nor did they outline what would count as a subsidy. What is a fossil fuel subsidy? It depends on where you live. Subsidies in industrialized countries including the U.S. come in the form of tax breaks for traditional "fossil fuel" energy companies. Developing nations often use subsidies to help consumers by keeping prices artificially low. Here's what the G20 did agree to: Rationalize and phase out over the medium term...

Online Marketing: It All Comes Back to the Written Word

No matter how you communicate with your online business, to potential and existing customers, words are always the cornerstone and more to the point, the written word. Today’s online business owners are moving into other forms of media like video and audio to market to their prospects. But, in this arena, it is the words that [...]

The Rise of the Non-Profit News Model

There have been a lot of creative efforts to re-energize serious journalism lately, especially from the non-profit perspective, with the latest being a $5 million grant from a local philanthropist to set up a new Bay Area news bureau in San Francisco. A group of former newspaper journalists and prominent citizens also intend to set up a non-profit "watchdog" site in Orange County, California, by the end of this year. To be named "The Voice of OC," this site is based on the five-year-old non-profit operation further south, "Voice of San Diego." Other projects have been reportedly emerging in Chicago, Seattle, and Minneapolis-St. Paul. And there also is the recent expansion of the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) with its...

Online News and the Paywall Gamble

With their advertising revenue drying up, newspaper publishers spent much of the spring and summer debating whether to cut off free online access to some of the material they run in their shrinking print editions. It looks like the talk will turn to action this fall, when some large newspapers are expected to put up Internet toll booths.

Bolstering BI With Web Data Services

The explosion of information from across the Web, from mobile devices, inside of social networks, and from the extended business processes that organizations are now employing, all provide an opportunity, but they also provide a challenge. This information can play a critical role in allowing organizations to gather and refine analytics into new market strategies and better buying decisions.

Bed, Bath & Beyond Executes Growth Strategy Despite Recession

Bed, Bath & Beyond’s strong financial position puts it in a particularly strong position to explore the opportunities an economic recovery might offer. That strength has allowed it to do something in the downturn that many other retailers have had to forget about, and that’s grow. And not just a store here and there. The company has been able to execute on its long-term strategy of growing its core namesake stores and adding new locations under its Harmon health and beauty care banner, buybuy Baby children’s specialty operations and Christmas Tree Shops, a seasonal specialist that also sells home furnishings at a somewhat lower price/quality position than Bed, Bath & Beyond stores. In the recently completed second quarter, noted Wedbush...

AT&T Accuses Google Of Violating Net Neutrality

AT&T is trying to play a vicious game of "I know you are, but what am I" with Google, using the Federal Communications Commission as a name-calling playground. In a letter to the FCC, AT&T's Robert Quinn called Google one of the most noisome trumpeters of so-called “net neutrality” regulation According to AT&T's screed, Google is in violation of net neutrality rules because its Google Voice application blocks certain services it doesn't like. One of the principles of net neutrality is that carriers and owners of networks shouldn’t discriminate against other services. Here's the thing, though: Google isn't a carrier or a network, and Google Voice is itself nothing but an application. The idea of this spurious claim is not...

Corporate Refugees: The Culture Shock of Working from Home

I recently ran across the term “corporate refugees.” While the author, Ron Consolino of the Houston Chronicle was referring to corporate refugees much like we here at the Outright blog refer to Unintentional Entrepreneurs, I thought the term evoked people who are fresh out of corporate America and are only just starting to find their [...]
