Here’s Something to Think (and Talk) About
I’m flying to New York City today for the Audience Conference, so I thought I’d share a quotation about the relationship between writers (or any content creator) and the people they hope to connect with.
When talented people write badly it’s generally for one of two reasons:
Either they’re blinded by an idea they feel compelled to prove or they’re driven by an emotion they must express.
When talented people write well, it is generally for this reason:
They’re moved by a desire to touch the audience.
~Robert McKee
Let’s discuss. What do McKee’s words mean to you?

When New York City mandated last year that chain restaurants had to label the calorie content of items on the menu, many assumed that lower calorie options would gain popularity. However, a study from the Yale School of Management found that this hasn't necessarily been the case.

Headed for the Clouds – Cisco, EMC and VMware Launch VCE Coalition
By and large, IT favors grand pronouncements and overheated rhetoric, and the industry abounds with "unprecedented" efforts firmly rooted in precedent and "unique" solutions fashioned from the commonest clay. Is that the case with Cisco, EMC and VMware's new Virtual Computing Environment coalition? Decidedly not.

AP: We Have Good News, Too
After my post earlier today about the Tribune Co.'s decision to go "AP Free" next week, a journalist friend emailed me, "Oh man, if AP were ever to fail ...I fear the worst is yet to come ..." Later on, the AP's Director of Media Relations, Paul Colford, contacted me to share some more encouraging news about the wire service. It turns out that, according to Editor & Publisher, 50 newspapers among the 130 or so who have indicated they intended to cancel the service during the past two years have rescinded those notices in recent months. Although the AP does not routinely release information about business decisions by its member papers, these reportedly include the New York Daily News...

Kohl’s Greens Up Its Image, and the Timing Couldn’t Be Better
With all that’s going on in the economy, the “new normal,” price wars, web wars and every other kind of initiative retailers are launching to chase the few dollars frugal consumers are spending, the amount of time, attention and money retailers are spending on sustainability seems amazing. Yet, it’s not surprising because nothing suits a company as much as making a virtue out of a necessity. Ultimately, the pursuit of the frugal consumer and of green shopper amounts to one and the same thing. To take a case in point, Kohl's (KSS) just announced that, for the second time, the company took the top spot among retailers in the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership quarterly rankings of...

Healthcare Roundup: Tenet Loses $3M, AAFP-Coke Deal Draws Protests, Device Makers Restricted, and More
Tenet Sees Silk Purse in Sow's Ear - Tenet Healthcare lost $3 million in the third quarter, compared to a $103 million gain in the prior-year period. The for-profit hospital chain also saw its bad debt jump to $190 million for the quarter, 17 percent more than in the third quarter of 2008. Admissions are down, and fewer patients are paying their copays. But, excluding discontinued operations, writedowns, and other items, the company still posted earnings of 3 cents a share, and Tenet CEO Trevor Fetter noted that employee turnover has declined as a result of the recession. Well, it's good to hear somebody is benefiting from the economic crash. [Sources: Dallas Morning News, Wall Street Journal] Revolt Against...
