Secure Your Files by Password Protecting, Hiding a Folder from View

Looking for a way to keep the codes to nuclear weapons or the secret ingredients to Coke safe and secure? You could encrypt the files, but they'd still be visible, and therefore potentially vulnerable. If the files were invisible, though - absolutely invisible from any search of the PC - then your locked files would be safe. After all, you can't steal what you can't see. That's the idea behind My Lockbox, which password protects and renders a folder invisible to all users of the PC. Once you protect a folder, it disappears from Windows Explorer and DOS command line searches - even for the computer's administrator. The only way to see the folder is to re-enter the password in...

Priceline Is Weak Sauce for Shatner’s Hype

As I got ready to jump off at the next stop on my whirlwind tour of travel-planning Web sites, I found myself in the grip of something close to excitement. Trying out Priceline.com was going to be a new experience for me as well -- but it already felt familiar, thanks to my beloved William Shatner (hello, fellow Trekkies) and his branding of the site.

Citi Dumps Credit Card Customers at the Pump

Shannon Burdette tried to pay with her Shell Mastercard after filling up her gas tank this weekend but found the card rejected. Confused, she called the Citibank customer service line and was told the account was closed because of something that appeared on her credit report. The only negative thing on her report, it turned out, was "closed at credit grantor's request" on the Shell MasterCard account.

Finally — Short Registration for This Site

In the roughly 15 or 16 months that I've been writing for BNET Technology, I've heard many complaints about the intrusive, prying, cumbersome, and long site registration policy and program. Even when I wasn't the one making them. Many people have shied off from leaving comments, and who could blame them? In fact, virtually all of the BNET bloggers have been complaining about this since, oh, day one. Well, it seems that all the complaining has finally paid off. We were informed that registering to leave comments on BNET now requires only providing your name, email address, and your choice of password. I'm sure my colleague Michael Hickins agrees this is an excellent development and would join me in welcoming...

[caption id="attachment_3717" align="alignleft" width="500" caption="printed circuit board merger"][/caption]The privately held company Viasystems announced that they had made a deal to merge with Merix this month. The two companies while manufacturing the same basic product have focused on different markets and capabilities. Viasystems utilizes its large line-up of company names to generate large amounts of circuit boards from production facilities mainly in Asia for OEM manufacturers. Merix has focused on rapid prototyping and production for its customers. One of the markets that has seen a great deal of growth recently for Merix has...

Solar Won’t Revive the Auto Industry Anytime Soon

It's a heartwarming story: A solar manufacturer needs metal and glass work done. An auto parts manufacturer, preparing to lay off thousands of workers, hears about it and bids on the work. A few months later, the factory is running at full tilt, but instead of CO2-producing automobiles it's pumping out CO2-saving solar equipment. Solar panels can't be made in this way; they're more akin to computer chips than cars. But as alternate forms of solar power that use expanses of metal and mirrors to catch the rays become popular, more old auto plants and solar companies are getting in on the action. Skyline Solar is the latest, with a deal for Cosma, a subsidiary of auto parts giant Magna...
