Omnicom Q3: Old-School U.S. Agencies Are Biggest Earners

There are two interesting things in Omnicom's Q3 2009 earnings results, out today: How much worse OMC's non-advertising disciplines are doing compared to its ad agency businesses (such as BBDO and DDB); and how much worse the U.K. is doing compared to the U.S.

Auto Brand Loyalty Isn’t What it Used to Be

According to a new study from CNW Marketing Research, only about 20 percent of new car shoppers stay with the auto brand they grew up on, reversing decades of assumed loyalty. Gone, apparently, when men (and it was usually men) would jingle the change in their pockets and pronounce themselves Ford or Chevy fans for life. This is bad news for the Big Three, which need consumers to stick with them as they struggle to recover from the recession. In the 1980s, according to the New York Times, four in five Americans stayed with a single car company—usually a domestic. Welcome to Guy Vs. Guy! In this recurring feature, Rick and Dave square off on the business and technology issues of the day. This week’s topic: The startling, sudden, and nearly disastrous loss of data on T-Mobile Sidekick phones. Obviously someone screwed up, but do users share some of the blame? Who's ultimately responsible for protecting your data? Rick: So by now most people have heard that thousands of T-Mobile Sidekick users have lost all their data, with little to no hope of getting it back. (Or so it seemed when we first started writing this. Now it appears that a recovery is indeed underway.) Ouch. This was the result of a server crash -- and Microsoft owns the Sidekick...

Complaints Go Down as On Time Percentage Rises

The August Air Travel Consumer Report is out, and a better on-time performance meant complaints went down. While the comparison isn't perfect, as you can see, when on time performance improves, complaints usually fall.

How to Sell More Ethically

I keep running into this little conundrum. One of the most important goals of copywriting is persuasion. In fact, it’s kind of the most important goal, because if you’re not trying to get your readers to do something, you’re probably going to stop calling yourself a “copywriter” and just go for “writer.” Writers can write [...]
