Liverpool F.C. Wants £240M for Naming Rights to Stanley Park … Or Does It?

Even as Liverpool F.C. owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks pursue a £240 sponsorship for naming rights to the club's planned new stadium, fans urged the pair to exit the club. Fans dislike the debt Hicks and Gillett have laden on the club. The owners went some way to proving their management chops last week when they announced a new £81 million sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered -- more than the double the club's previous deal with Carlsberg, under the old owners.

Create Community Forums with Zoho Discussions

Discussion forums offer a simple, inexpensive, and effective way to communicate with customers. Of course, not all business owners have the time or know-how to add one. Enter Zoho Discussions, which makes setting up community forums a breeze. You can use these forums to offer customer support, both from your company and from other users, or to give your employees an intranet-style place to discuss company matters. Take a look at the introductory video: It took me about three minutes to whip together the Business Hacks forum shown above (feel free to try it out!), and the result was a simple, intuitive message board. But I did find some evidence of Zoho Discussions' 1.0 nature, like the inability to upload...

Google (with Al Gore’s Help) Takes Users On Guided Climate Change Tour

Google launched today a series of guided tours developed to give users a bird's eye view of the potential impact climate change could have on the world. The search engine giant -- embracing the seeing is believing mantra -- uses its virtual globetrotting program Google Earth and data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to illustrate different emissions scenarios and its impact on the world. The first of the series called, Confronting Climate Change, is a short introductory tour guided by narrator, former vice president and climate change guru Al Gore. The effort from Google makes sense, given the company's philanthropic commitments to tackling climate change. The Mountain View, Calif.,-based company has worked on developing a gigawatt of renewable electricity that is cheaper than...

Can Savile Row Survive the Times?

Last week I spoke with Savile Row tailor Richard Anderson who had recently published his book: Richard Anderson c Neil Gavin.JPGBespoke: Savile Row Ripped and Smoothed, his insider account of the world of men’s tailoring. In an era of outsourcing, ready-to-wear, and mass production, Savile’s dedication to centuries-old, labor intensive, hand-crafted traditions would appear to be outmoded – particularly in a time of economic distress. An article in the AP today looks at this elite world on one of London’s most famous streets and asks:

“Can clubby Savile Row tailors really survive in the Age of Bling? Can they cope when older, suit-wearing customers retire to the countryside, replaced by a younger generation that never learned how to tie a Windsor knot? And how do they weather a recession when a custom-made suit starts at about 3,000 pounds ($4,800) and quickly shoots into the stratosphere?”
