Content & Copy: Bring Those Goals Together for Better Results

Those who believe that content and copy (i.e. “copywriting”, using words to sell) are two separate entities have this to say: “Providing content on your website is for the purpose of information and not necessarily to sell a product.” “On the other hand, writing copy is definitely to sell products to potential customers.” If you think [...]

Moody Blues: Insurance Regulators May Bypass Rater after Snub

Once known for its creampuff reputation, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners is mad as hell and not going take it anymore. Moody's Investors Service, one of the big three credit rating agencies, apparently will not attend the September 24 hearing that the NAIC is holding to review the raters' dismal performance during the mortgage meltdown. Not smart. The NAIC, collectively, represents the 50-plus insurance commissioners who run the U.S. insurance system, so they are not to be trifled with. And the most important state, New York, where many of the biggest insurers like American International Group and MetLife are regulated, is going one step further. The Empire State's Deputy Insurance Commissioner Hampton Finer is asking whether Moody's should have its...

Dora Launch Timely for Kmart, But Macy’s and Pathmark Make Latin Mark, Too

Kmart has announced that it is launching a new licensed product line featuring Nickelodeon’s popular Dora the Explorer character, and it’s timing couldn’t be better. The launch certainly won’t be the first for the Dora character. She already adorns all kinds of kids merchandise and, in fact, is probably the only Nic character today that rivals the popularity of the wildly successful SpongeBob SquarePants, who draws about 70 million viewers monthly, according to Nickelodeon’s parent Viacom. Dora the Explorer has been rated the top pre-school program on U.S. television, the company stated. What Kmart is launching is a particular line it will be handling exclusively dubbed Dora Loves Puppy. It will include apparel, toy and other goods ranging from bedding,...

Swine Flu Still Scares Airlines

The H1N1 virus, aka the swine flu, has had a media resurgence and the travel industry seems to be panicking -- but is it justified or alarmism? So far airlines have said they will likely bar sick passengers from boarding, offer anti-bacterial wipes and keep blankets and pillows off planes. (Someone should tell them that it's a virus, not a bacterial infection.) Apparently the threat of the pandemic is so large that passengers are now more likely to hire a charter plane than fly on a commercial airline. According to Bloomberg: “Swine flu has certainly increased traffic,” said Rob Dore, a director at Jet Direct Service Ltd. based in Shoreham-by-Sea, England. “Predominantly it’s the largest corporate clients. They are concerned about the wellbeing of their...

Will Fewer Wireless Carriers Mean Fewer Price Cuts?

How many wireless carriers do we need? It's a question that's popping up again as T-Mobile USA is said to be looking at buying Sprint Nextel. Now that most people have a cellphone and once-heady growth in the industry is slowing, analysts say carriers are going to be looking at buying each other to increase their scale and to avoid competing too much on price.

DoJ Intervenes Against Google Book Search

The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) tonight has informed the federal judge overseeing a proposed class-action settlement of the Google Book Search case that it officially opposes the settlement, as currently structured, but that since the parties are continuing to negotiate, it reserves the right to revise its legal opinion about the case in the future. An initial reading of the 32-page filing leads to the impression that the Obama administration may be more ambivalent about opposing the proposed settlement than these bottom-line conclusions might suggest. This is because the department's document strikes its most articulate and unambiguous tone when it clearly recognizes the potential public good that Google has already accomplished to date: "The proposed settlement has the potential...
