NBTA Day Three: Virgins, Travel Trends, and President Clinton

Usually the last day of any conference, especially a longer one like NBTA, is a pretty light day. Many people have already left because they've done their business, and most people need to get back to work. While there were people who left NBTA early this year, it was clear that many people stuck around simply for the closing session. Why? It was a talk delivered by President Clinton. Let's look at some highlights from the day.

Keep Your Team in Sync with Tgether

I tend to spend a lot of time looking for new and better online collaboration tools. Many are pretty cool, but for the most part, they all suffer from the same limitation: They require everyone to log into some new Web site in order to take advantage. Tgether is a little different: It functions like an e-mail distribution group. That means you don't have to force some new tool on your people; just give them a Tgether e-mail address, and all your communication gets automatically distributed to everyone on the team. So far, so good, right? But I hear what you're saying:  How is it any better than just using a distribution group? Well, Tgether archives everything that gets sent...

Consumers Move to 64-bit Computing, Software Opportunities

The topic of 64-bit chips and hardware has been around for years ... and over the same period, there's been the question of whether consumers would adopt the more powerful platforms. Some recent tours of chain stores are suggesting to me, at least, that it's finally in the mainstream.

Chinese Carmaker BYD to Bring EVs to U.S. Next Year

In a sign of a heightened international competition, the leading Chinese battery maker and (increasingly) carmaker BYD (“Build Your Dreams”) is intending to bring its E6 electric car to the U.S. a year sooner than previously announced. That will make it available here next year, just in time to compete with the Nissan Leaf (also a battery car) and Chevrolet Volt (a “range extender” whose small gas engine acts as a generator to supply the electric motor). Nearly 10 percent of BYD was purchased for $230 million last year by savvy investor Warren Buffett, who acted on the advice of a friend. Buffett’s investment has echoes in Daimler’s purchase of 10 percent of Tesla—in both cases, the investors were picking apparent...

HR: Nothing Personal

"The more I know about you as a person, the less effective I am at my job in HR," says Punk Rock HR in this pithy little post. Initially, I read this as a deliberately provocative statement -- isn't it essential that an HR professional be a "people person" above all?  But reading the comments and thinking about it a bit further, it began to make more sense. A line manager may need to have good rapport with the people they work with, but the in HR, it may be beneficial to be at one remove, able to offer objectivity and oversight across the whole of the company. "HR professionals are employee advocates, charged with making sure the employer-employee relationship...

For Late Bloomers Everywhere … Hope, Optimism.

I didn’t want to add another Ted Kennedy tribute to the world today, but Dan Levine (schoolmarketer in twitter) tipped me off to Ted Kennedy, Low Potential Leader by Sarah Green on a Harvard Business School blog; and I couldn’t resist passing it on. Especially this last paragraph: So for me, today, Ted Kennedy’s life is [...]

Testosterone Affects Financial Risk Taking, Study Finds

The differences between men and women have long been the topic of Venus-and-Mars themed relationship books and staples of comedians' routines. Lately, they've also been popping up in b-school related news. Last week, I wrote about a new study finding that women tend to underestimate the performance reviews given by their superiors, colleagues and employees, whereas men more often overestimate their rankings. This week, a widely reported news story claims that women with higher levels of testosterone take bigger financial risks, a characteristic more often associated with men. The research behind the headline was conducted by Paola Sapienza, an associate professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management; Luigi Zingales, a professor at the University of Chicago's Booth School of...

Is Your CRM System Blocking Sales?

It's a complete myth that CRM automatically makes sales teams more productive.  In fact, there are many cases where CRM has made it much more difficult for sales teams to actual sell. Here are the five red flags that your CRM system is more bother than it's worth: Red Flag #1. Nobody on the sales team wants to use it. It's a bad sign if the sales manager has to pressure the reps to use tye system - like by threatening to withhold commissions if they don't.  RULE: Sales reps ALWAYS embrace technology that helps them sell and ALWAYS resist technology that wastes their time. Red Flag #2. The system enforces somebody else's "best practices." No single set of "best...
