HBR: Limits Needed on Business Growth
It was almost a sin over the last decade to suggest we should accept limits on how fast our businesses could grow. Smart growth, yes. But holding back growth on purpose? Try telling that to your investors. But things have changed; we now are entering an era where we acknowledge that resources such as energy are not unlimited. Stan Stalnaket, in his provocative post The Next Evolution in Economics: Rethinking Growth on Harvard Business Review argues that unrestrained growth, which is the definition of cancer in organisms, is not only unhealthy but unsustainable. But nature also shows us a solution: regeneration. ''Cellular economic theory suggests an alternative to linear growth: circular growth. In the body, cells grow. Cells die. New...

What Does Time Warner Know About Nielsen Ratings That We Don’t?
Less than a week after major media players (finally) declared mutiny against Nielsen Media's estimated TV ratings, Time Warner has signed a new seven-year agreement with Nielsen for cross-platform and device measurement. Time Warner also belongs to the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement, which is exploring ways to use TV set-top boxes from cable and satellite companies and other new tools to measure consumer media use via TV and online and mobile devices. Is Workplace Inequality Still In Place — Or Just In Women’s Minds?
To many, women's business fashions of the 1980s -- the shoulder pads and the power suits -- were evidence of women trying to fit into a man's world. While the shoulder pads were thankfully ditched some time ago, evidence abounds that women still suffer insecurities about their workplace standing. Recently, a study led by Professor Scott N. Taylor of the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico found that women managers asked to predict how their supervisors, peers and employees rated them often believed that they were being rated lower than they actually were. Men, on the other hand, were right on target with their predictions, and in some cases, overestimated their standing. While this might sound...

Shake Up In SETA Work Possible
In the last fifteen years or so there has been major consolidation in the defense industry. The big hardware producers like Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman expanded by buying other companies in different business areas. Some of this investment was with the engineering companies that provided Scientific, Engineering and Technical Analysis (SETA) services to the Department of Defense and the different branches of the Armed Forces. SETA contractors normally work side-by-side with Government employees and uniformed acquisition professionals to aid in the development, production and management of programs. They have increased in size and role as the Government shed a lot of workers in the Clinton Administrations. Over the last eight years with the expansion of the defense budget...

Top Sales Pros Really Love Cold Calling
There are dozens of "how to cold call" articles that begin with a phrase like: "nobody likes cold calling." I beg to differ. There are some sales professional who like cold calling. No, they love it. Far from considering it a burden, they consider cold calling fun, interesting and profitable. Who are they? They're the sales pros in your industry who are cleaning your clock. Here's an analogy. Most people hate exercising and don't it; they're called couch potatoes. Some people hate exercise but do it anyway ; they're called healthy people. A very small number of people exercise simply because they love it; they're called athletes. I firmly believe that it's IMPOSSIBLE to get good at anything that...
