Lending Rises Among Banks That Raised Government Funds

As the credit markets were seizing up last fall, the Treasury Department established the so-called Capital Purchase Program to stimulate bank lending. Has it worked? About as well as could be expected. In the second quarter, banks that raised money through the program made an aggregate $287 billion in loans per month to individuals and businesses, up from $240 billion per month in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to a new GAO report. That's not a massive leap, but it's significant given the tightening in lending standards and that credit usually wanes during economic recessions. Surprise! Insurers Are Popular, Study Shows

Here's a "dog bites man" story: a new study by J.D. Power and Associates shows that homeowners are actually happy with their insurance companies. For the first time in five years, overall satisfaction with homeowner insurance has increased "significantly," according to the marketing research firm. That's a far cry from the abuse the insurers took following 2005's Hurricane Katrina and her sisters, Hurricanes Rita and Wilma. That horrible fall season saw $80 billion worth of damage to Gulf States. Homeowners were justifiably angry when they found out they weren't going to be paid because insurers claimed that floods and not high winds had knocked down their houses. FCC Chair Warns of Wireless Gridlock

The Internet first acquired its designation as "information superhighway" via the Clinton administration in the 1990s. It added an express lane with the rise of wireless broadband in the early 21st century, and FCC chairman Julius Genachowski completed the automotive metaphor Wednesday with a speech that warned of a looming spectrum traffic jam if wireless growth isn't managed properly.
