Seven Essential Apps for Traveling with Your iPhone
I'm reaching the point where my iPhone is almost more important than my laptop when I travel. After all, my iPhone is chock full of apps that are optimized for specific jobs. With that in mind, I rounded up eight essential apps that I wouldn't be caught dead without on my next trip away from home or the office. Quickoffice. This one is a no-brainer; equipped with this app, I can read and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents that I bring along or get in e-mail. I really can leave the laptop at home. You'll need to pony up $19 for this one, though -- it's the only pay app in the list. Taxi Magic. Need to rely on...

Strong Ethics or Strong Regulation – Our Choice
I often hear people express fear at the "threat" of future regulation by a government agency. I have to admit I have the opposite reaction. As leaders in the world of e-commerce and online communication, we are in the driver's seat to either show that we are serious about ethics -- or that we need adult supervision.

The iPhone’s 2 Billion Horsepower App Engine
Apple's App store surpassed the 2 billion download mark this week, and now has more than 85,000 apps in the offering. Meanwhile, the iPhone is going into new markets overseas. Apple's books could see a boost with new accounting rules, and there appear to be strong indications that Cupertino will soon introduce new items in its line of desktops.

What Is On-Demand?
I have an ongoing conversation with an industry executive about the nature of on-demand, SaaS and cloud computing. The central question is, what is it exactly? Our conversation is always thought provoking, and I come away from it with at least some additional perspective.

New Tanker Contest Off To A Rocky Start
Less then a week after the release of the draft RFP for the new Air Force tanker there are already issues being raised about fairness in the competition. Lessons From the Umbrella Seller
Eventually, we all become salesmen. The more senior we become, the more our job means persuading and influencing people to do things. We give ourselves grand titles like Vice President, Senior Vice President, Executive Vice President or even Big Banana. But behind the grand titles lies the reality that we are all salesmen. Ask any true salesmen, and (s)he will tell you that sales is the highest calling of them all. So how do you sell? My first insight came from Daniel. He was selling umbrellas on a sunny day. And he was doing good business: all the beach goers wanted to buy some shade. But he did no business with me: I was going scuba diving. Selling umbrellas to...

The Good Old AP Does It Again
My Bnet Media colleague Cathy Taylor cracked me up earlier today, with her observation that the Associated Press has priced its mobile version of the storied AP Stylebook at more than twice what the paper version costs on Amazon. Good luck on selling that one, AP. Even better was Cathy's email to me a bit later. The subject line said it all: "Fwd: AP Stylebook is now following you on Twitter!" Sounds like a possible stalking case to me. But seriously, what is going on with the AP this year? Have the people running the wire service gone completely insane? As one who has spent many of the past 40 years ensuring that the editorial standards wherever I was working...
