Small Mass. Firms Still Seeking Affordable Insurance

When Massachusetts passed its landmark healthcare reform law in 2006, some observers expected that it would lead to a drop in employer-provided coverage, especially among small firms, because the legislated penalty for not providing insurance--$295 per worker per year-was much smaller than the cost of coverage. But this has not proved to be the case. In fact, the percentage of Massachusetts adults who get health insurance through their employer has actually increased 5 percentage points to 70 percent. The biggest factor appears to be competition among employers for workers. Because everyone in Massachusetts has to buy insurance, or face a stiff penalty, employers feel they have to offer coverage to keep good employees. Yet with state unemployment at 8.8 percent,...

Iceland Fast-Tracks Electric Car Charging

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND—Gisli Gislason is on a mission: He wants to buy 1,200 electric cars. Right now. And that’s easier said than done. Encountered just before the Driving Sustainability ’09 conference in Iceland’s capital, the ginger-haired Gislason is the CEO of Northern Lights Energy, whose 2012 New Beginnings is aiming to wire this country of 300,000 people for fast charging by that soon-to-arrive date. Iceland, with its abundant supply of inexpensive geothermal energy and small, concentrated population, is ideally suited to be the first country in Europe hard wired for EVs. In Gislason, it might have found the right person to carry the mission beyond the talking stages. I spoke to him against a backdrop of his white Tesla Roadster, the...

Business Bartering – It’s A Whole New World

Recently as you may know this site here literally flaked out on me.  It didn’t matter which link you clicked on the home page it brought you back to the home page. It was rather frustrating for me because it wasn’t something easy for me to fix and the theme has been very finicky since I [...]

Now’s the Time to Invest Overseas | BTalk Australia

[podcasts] Many investors only purchase shares in their own country. If they diversified globally they would see a higher return. Diversification is particularly important in Australia, which accounts for such a small proportion of the global share market.

Obama Healthcare Reform Speech More Popular Than “American Idol” Finale

Not that the networks will make any money off of it, but President Obama's healthcare reform speech was a huge hit, according to Nielsen. All told, across the ten broadcast and cable networks on which the Wednesday night speech aired, 31 million Americans watched, adding up to a combined household rating of 20.4 and a share of 35. As my headline implies, that means that more Americans watched the speech -- set, of course, against a highly partisan backdrop even before Rep. Joe Wilson's infamous, um commentary -- than watched the "American Idol" finale this year. That drew 28.8 million viewers, albeit on only one network. (It's important to remember that the massive coverage of the Obama speech left fewer...

Target Pushing Employees to Live Healthier and Save It Money

A newly launched Target program promises to improve employee health – and should aid in cutting the company’s healthcare costs – but has been developed in such a way as encourage workers to coax others into the retailer’s growing wellness circle. The retailer calls the program the Target Live Well Challenge, and it is based on participation in an initiative dubbed MD Health Evolution. The centerpiece of that is a web site developed to help visitors make lifestyle changes that improve health and well-being. The 12-week MD Health Evolution course helps participants understand how to alter behaviors that impair and to encourage them to pursue practices that potentially improve health outcomes. Target is offering free access to the site not...
