This is a guest post by Nicholas Z. Cardot. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here. Since I've started blogging I've had a few people ask me about my writing process so I've decided to share it with you today. This development process is pretty much the same exact steps that I've taken on every single post on Site Sketch 101. I'm going to take you from the concept development phase all the way to hitting the publish button.

The CW Takes to the Skies to Promote New Series

With all of the talk about integration of TV and digital, I was struck by this bit of old-school promotional weirdness over the weekend on the beaches along the South Shore of Boston: a single-prop airplane hauling a banner promoting the CW's new version of "Melrose Place" and "The Vampire Diaries." Why this was a good place to promote these series puzzles me -- it's not as though the South Shore, which includes the small beach communities of Humarock and Green Harbor is a hotbed of population, or the youth market these series want to attract, even on Labor Day. (Green Harbor's population is a modest 2,400 according to the 2000 census.) But there the plane went, on both Saturday...

Russia Exploits OPEC Cuts, Tops Saudi Arabia in Oil Exports

Russia's continued exploitation of OPEC's oil production cuts gives credo to the old Heinz slogan "the best things come to those who wait." Not too long ago, rhetoric from Russia gave the impression it was aligned with the Organization of Petroleum Exporter's Council in a mission to control oil prices. Russia, the largest non-OPEC producing country in the world, had volunteered to cut production in the weeks leading up to December's special OPEC meeting -- a move it had previously resisted. Russia's Deputy Minister Igor Sechin made a commitment to cut oil deliveries in the days before OPEC's March meeting, saying "We support the reduction of deliveries to the market, and Russia will participate in this work." And all of this, of course,...

Ex-Wells Fargo Loan Officer Details Shady Practices

In a June interview with The Charlotte Observer, Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf rejected allegations of predatory lending by the banking giant, especially in how it deals with minorities. "We make those loans in a fair and responsible way. We absolutely do not tolerate discrimination. We do not use race in our underwriting criteria. . . .  No matter whether they come through the subprime channel or the prime channel, we give them the best deal so they can get the very best rate." The comments echoed the executive's remarks to lawmakers earlier this year, when he said Wells recognizes that many of its customers "are facing difficult times" and that "now, as always, we want to do what's right...

Sears Adopts Its Own Blue Light Special as Retailing Distinctions Fade

Sears and Kmart are getting more alike all the time. Sears has begun running hourly promotions in its stores, reminiscent of the Blue Light Specials that Kmart ran for years in an iconic marketing approach it has tried to revive with limited success. Announced in an email blast from Sears, the 1 Hour Specials were an important element in the company’s Labor Day weekend promotional strategy and provided New Offers Every Hour, the content promised, but were strictly In-Store Only. However, they weren’t new for the holiday. Sears Holding spokesman Tom Aiello told Bnet: Sears has been running these one-hours specials for a little over a month. They are being kept up because of the strong customer response we've received...

Big Green Claims for the Fisker Karma Supercar

The Fisker Karma will be at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, and the Irvine, California-based company is claiming very strong green credentials for its ultra-fast (zero to 62 in six seconds) plug-in hybrid supercar. Using Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) calculators, Fisker says it gets 67.2 mpg. This is far from a number to take to the bank, since there’s no settled way of calculating mpg for plug-in hybrids, and the EPA hasn’t rated the Karma. The company thinks it will eventually get EPA rated at better than 100 mpg. The company also claims that the Karma produces just 83 grams of carbon dioxide (the principal global warming gas) per kilometer, “less than that of today’s cleanest production cars...
