Trouble With Retirement? Get a Job!
Dear Stanley, I am retired and am upset that your blog only caters to working stiffs! There are plenty of problems out there for retired jerks, maybe even more than for working jerks. What do you intend to do about this oversight? Signed, Sidelined But Not Out Dear Retired Jerk, You have my sympathy. I know there are problems encountered by those who spend their lives in pointless, lazy indolence ... who aren't senior executives, I mean. Just kidding! Executives are people, too! The fact that their lives basically mirror those of affluent retirees is a fact that won't be mentioned here. It will, however, pop up in November when my new paperback comes out. It's called "How to Relax...

Family Dollar Betting on Long Recession?
Family Dollar seems to be betting that the recession is going to last awhile longer. Right now most bargain retailers are doing everything they can to make themselves more consumer friendly, seeking to win sales from folks trading down for lower prices amid economic malaise and to make the shopping experience pleasant enough to ensure that at least some who might not have before continue to patronize them after the recession. Yet, Family Dollar picked the trench of the recession to make a stand and change how it has been setting up stores. The idea was to confront shoppers with more consumable products such as paper towels and other frequently purchased, everyday items. Even the company’s website features such items,...

Memo to AIG CEO Benmosche: Don’t Shut Up
A triad of Wall Street Journal reporters was needed to research and write a story about how American International Group board members were anonymously criticizing CEO Robert Benmosche for some of his comments. Since he's only been in the job less than a month and has spent most of that time in Croatia, it's amazing that he could get in trouble so quickly. But then all of AIG CEOs have been the victim of drive-bys: Hank Greenberg, Martin Sullivan, Robert Willumstad, and, of course the most visible one, Ed Liddy, who was used as a piñata by Congress. But Benmosche, former top dog at MetLife, is the first one who's pushing back. He reportedly told employees that New York Attorney...

Medicare Advantage Cure Is Worse Than The Disease
During the 2008 election campaign, then Sen. Obama and other Democratic Presidential candidates bemoaned the excessive amount that Medicare was paying private Medicare Advantage plans. And President Obama has made cutbacks in these payments part of his "reserve fund" for healthcare reform. But the way the government proposes to reduce payments to Medicare Advantage plans may be counterproductive, according to a new study from George Washington University. The Office of Management and Budget has proposed a competitive bidding process in which the payments to MA plans would be based on the average of all bids submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in a particular area. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that this approach would result...
