Build Value In Your Business

I recently caught up with serial-entrepreneur, Tom Poland in this little video interview. Tom has started a small portfolio of very different businesses and while he's taken a good few into international markets and successfully sold a handful, at least one has nearly ruined him. The result of his experiences has been the design of a process that entrepreneurs can follow to turn an ordinary businesses into a multi-million dollar asset. So far Tom's program has helped nearly 1500 people across 56 different industries grow their business. Watch the interview here.

A research paper in this month’s Bulletin of the World Health Organization suggests that, when it comes to disease funding, perception is reality. Some diseases get more than their fair share of government and nonprofit funding, and the researchers say it all comes down to positioning.

Jos. A. Bank Joins Others in Choosing Older Centers

Male apparel chain Jos. A. Bank Clothiers is surprisingly increasing its number of new store openings next year, while most chains are pulling the brakes on their expansion plans. Not only that, but the Hampstead, Md.-based chain and other retailers, which only considered opening stores in new shopping centers, are taking advantage of low lease rates and empty spaces in existing shopping centers where outfits like Circuit City vacated. The 467-unit Jos. A. Bank originally planned to open 10 to 15 new locations in 2010, but executives now forecast to reach from 30 to 40 stores on its way to a total of 600 U.S. storefronts. "Quality real estate opportunities are beginning to open up in the marketplace, and we...

Disney Might Not Mind If You Make a Hannah Montana Video

This seems as appropriate a topic for a post as any for the last weekend in August: that the Walt Disney Co. apparently has no problem with this YouTube video showing a group of gay men cavorting to the Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana video "Party in the USA." This was reported in The New York Times, y'all, so it must be true. (Well, possibly not, but that's a story for another time.) At any rate, even more amazing than the fact that the video is still up, and holding steady at close to 300,000 views since being posted four days ago, is that Disney Channels worldwide president of Rick Ross, called its creator to say how much he liked it. (It...

Michael Jackson’s Death Worth $67 Million to the Magazine Biz

Back in late June, several days after Michael Jackson's death, I figured that the demise of the "King of Pop" would be a shot in the arm for the magazine business. But I wasn't expecting it to be this big. MagNet, which follows these things, says that so far the magazine business has benefited to the tune, forgive the pun, of $67 million -- $55 million of that coming from special tribute editions. Crazy. As Nat Ives points out in the Advertising Age story covering this data, the uptick won't be reflected in about-to-be-released data from the Audit Bureau of Circulations covering first half 2009 magazine sales. Jackson died too late in June for the MJ effect to be a...
