Clean Up Your Desktop with the Release Version of Fences

I hate scattering icons and folders on my desktop, but I also like the convenience of storing files I need on the desktop where they're easy to get to. The middle ground? Fences, a program that lets you organize icons into groups that you can show or hide with a double click. The good news is that Fences, which was in beta, just went all 1.0 on us, and it's still free. I've written about Fences before, but here's a short video that shows off why Fences should be on your desktop:

Compassion Should Be Universal

I’ve posted about the Charter for Compassion before. In this post about a year ago, I said: Do you want to help solve one of the world’s great problems? This has to be as important as clean energy: religious fundamentalism turning into violence and hatred. The darker side of humanity seems at its worst when powered [...]

Starbucks Sues Former Exec Over Dunkin’ Job

Dunkin' Donuts new brand operations officer Paul Twohig deserves some sort of prize for brazenness. Starbucks is suing Twohig, saying he violated a non-compete agreement with the coffee company when he took the Dunkin' Donuts position. Twohig was a senior VP in brand development for Starbucks until March, when he left the company. A non-compete clause banned him from working for any competitors for 18 months. According to the Starbucks complaint, Twohig actually called Starbucks in August asking to be released from the clause so he could work for Dunkin' Donuts. Starbucks refused, the company says, but Twohig took the job anyway. The best part of the story is how Starbucks learned about Twohig's new position: through an internet search....

Not in Sales? You Still Need an Elevator Pitch

The elevator pitch - the ability to sum up what you're selling in the thirty seconds it takes to travel a few floors - is usually thought to be the province of skilled salespeople and polished job seekers, but if a post by Jodi Glickman Brown on the HBR Conversation Starter blog is right, everyone who has a career and attends the occasional cocktail party needs one. That means you, Gen Y non-salespeople. She argues that: Your personal 30-second spiel about who you are, how you're different, and why you're memorable is arguably more important once you've landed that great position or won the support of investors and now interact with senior colleagues and important clients regularly. A managing director...

7 Ways To Be More Attractive To Lenders

It’s always said that access to funds is the life blood of any company. Going out and securing outside financing to help grow a business is an important step in the life of an emerging organization. Keep in mind, the process of commercial borrowing is best done in preparation for needing the capital, rather than [...]

Selling Corporate Blogging: Keep Quiet on ROI

Getting the buy-in for a social media initiative, such as corporate blogging often requires some solid ROI calculation. Often, budget managers won't see the value of it, because it doesn't have an obvious link to a revenue stream. It's uncommon for any commercial project to be given the green light without translating the effort required into cost and potential profit. Any project involving IT will have to overcome internal scepticism and mistrust -- fuelled by a litany of commercial IT projects in the past that turned into disasters, in terms of cost and, in some intances, negative PR. Even email, if looked at on an ROI basis is on shaky ground. I have already described how to preserve your productivity by staying on top of your email. But, email can also be responsible for stress...

Micro-geographic Targeting: Usability and SEO Concerns

One of the most complex industries for ecommerce is telecommunications or “telco.” Telcos may sell any or all of the following services: home telephone, cable/satellite television, dialup/broadband Internet/mobile broadband, mobile phone service. A telco may be “double-play” (offering any combination of two services), “triple-play” or “quad-play,” and often seek to bundle services to their customers. Not [...]

Gearing Up for the Project Management Market Explosion

The economic stimulus assistance injected into major industrial countries to counter the effects of a global recession shone a spotlight on the need to rebuild their infrastructures. The need to manage such public works investments efficiently has generated a huge potential market for project management software and related services.
