Havas Q2: 1,200 Jobs Lost; “At Least We Ain’t IPG!”
Havas has laid off off 1,200 of its staff since June 2008, according to a presentation it made to investors this morning. Havas -- which consists largely of Euro RSCG and Havas Media -- had not previously totalled the number of jobs it cut across its network. The cuts represent about 8 percent of its workforce, which now numbers 13,900.

Call to Action of The Day: Send Us Your Worst
I have a bad habit, when I’m using my personal Gmail account, of clicking on the most ridiculous-sounding PPC ads Google decides to serve me. I know, I need help
One such ad brought me to a very tall landing page with the expected “sales letter” style copy. What struck…

Red Roof Inn Looking to Upgrade
I read a blog post about how Red Roof Inns are going all chi-chi la-la and trying to upgrade their image. (I guess the one-cent rooms were a little premature.) The new style, dubbed "NextGen," is debuting in Beaumont, Texas. The economy chain is also making a pretty sweet deal for franchisees of the new brand, including a $50,000 credit, no royalties and reduced marketing and reservation fees for the first seven years. While I commend Red Roof Inn and any other budget motel upgrading or remodeling (the average nightly rate is $59) one of the main worries for people staying at budget motels is security. How safe is the property? A quick search brings up several Red Roof Inn crime scenes in the...

Hannah Montana, Meet the Incredible Hulk
If anyone needed evidence that content is still king, yesterday's blockbuster announcement that Disney is acquiring Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion provided some fairly persuasive proof. Those, and other Marvel assets will no doubt allow Disney to attract more of the young male demographic to its offerings, in an era it has appeared to skew female, with girl stars like Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tinsdale, Hilary Duff and the teen heart throb band, the Jonas Brothers. It may be a small sample statistically, but in my...

Apple Dances Around Overheating Problems, So Who’s Surprised?
Apple is claiming that reports of overheating and exploding iPhones is all a matter of outside pressure. In other words, Apple says it's all the fault of users. But carefully crafted language, denial, and then further silence may not be enough to keep the lid on a problem that has been developing for years.
