Former P&G Ad Chief Describes Sex Addiction That Plagued His Career

It's well known that former Procter & Gamble global vp of marketing Denis Beausejour left his position atop the planet's largest advertising budget to go into the seminary. It's less well-known that during his rise at P&G he struggled with a sex addiction that included massage parlors, hookers and porn.

Ads Not Getting Clicked? What’s the “Dwell Rate” Like?

Online advertising is not just about the clicks, as a recent study from marketing firm Eyeblaster clearly illustrates. Users can engage with advertisements without actually clicking through.

In fact, Eyeblaster is even trying to coin a new metric called "dwell time." This is in reference to the amount of time a user "dwells" on an ad. This could mean different things depending on the nature of the ad. It could be how long the ad is viewed if it contains video, how long it is expanded if it is expandable, etc.

Galderma Distributed Bogus PI for Skin Drug, FDA Claims

Galderma Labs distributed a bogus product label for its Tri-Luma Cream that falsely claimed the drug was for long-term use and failed to note that it can cause birth defects if used by pregnant women, the FDA said. Tri-Luma, for hyperpigmenation, is approved only for short-term use and can cause pregancy risks

Gadget Lust: DUO Turns Your Laptop Into a Tablet

Like Bill Gates, our own Dave Johnson erroneously predicted that tablet PCs would take over the world. (They also championed voice recognition, snicker, snicker.) Of course, there are times when a pen-operated touchscreen comes in handy, like when you want to sketch something, scribble notes in your own hand, etc. But instead of spending big bucks on a tablet, why not turn your existing laptop or netbook into one? That's the idea behind DUO, which turns almost any LCD into a touchscreen. Check out the video demo: Cool, no? The DUO integrates with the tablet-PC software built into Windows Vista and Windows 7. And its clip-on recognition gizmo plugs into a USB port and works with any LCD that measures...

Abercrombie, Victoria’s Secret Are Right to Discount

Limited Brands' Victoria's Secret chain, Abercrombie & Fitch and other apparel retailers are lowering prices on some of their goods as consumers continue to feel financial strain. Though some industry observers point to concerns that lower prices could cheapen their brands, these companies are making the right decision in efforts to connect with a hesitant shopper and correct severely lagging sales. Victoria's Secret will introduce a new bra next month priced at $29.50, and it's Pink line will start selling two bras for $32. The future may bring more deals. Said Sharen Turney, chief executive officer of the chain, during the company's second-quarter earnings call: "We are obviously prepared if the economy turns on us that we will engage in...

For years, the growth in luxury-car sales outstripped the rest of the auto industry, even after gas prices started rising in 2004. But the current recession is denting the rich, too.

Video: Five Essentials for Managing Talent

This video clip on talent management by SumTotal Systems's Alex Raymond offers a lucid starting point for companies that are facing a talent leak (and it is possible to suffer from this while the job market is apparently flooded with graduates.) First, he outlines the steps that senior execs and managers need to consider when thinking about talent management, starting by what's driven you to create a talent management plan in the first place. (Interesting that people are the fourth consideration, after drivers, strategy and alignment -- but that's for a separate post.) For those who cannot spare eight minutes, here are the five 'essentials' for talent managers: Recruiting --  roles and competencies the business needs, and how it can...

It’s National ‘Pick On McDonald’s’ Week

In the mood for "talking smack" about McDonald's? Join the club. Carl's Jr. spent last week dissing the Big Mac and McDonald's new Angus burger, and now Burger King is "trash-talking McDonald's Double Cheeseburger." It's mostly a size war; both rivals say McDonald's makes puny products. CKE Restaurants, which owns Hardee's and Carl's Jr., says the new McDonald's Angus burger is a copycat product, as CKE chains have sold comparable premium burgers for years. Furthermore, said CKE Restaurants CEO Andrew Puzder, the Carl's Jr. version "has 24 percent more meat than McDonald’s Third Pounders, yet costs the same," while the Hardee's version has the same amount of meat but costs less. "Don’t believe the McHype," CKE said in a press...
